Licensed Training Provider of the American Red Cross.

J Dallas offers lifeguarding, lifeguarding certification, and lifeguarding instructor courses conducted through the American Red Cross curriculum.

Junior Lifeguarding

Get ready to dive into lifeguarding! 🌊 The Junior Lifeguarding Program is the perfect stepping stone for youth ages 11–14 who are interested in becoming Red Cross-certified lifeguards when they turn 15. This exciting, hands-on program builds a strong foundation of lifesaving skills, teamwork, and confidence—all while having fun in and out of the water! 🧠💪🏽🏊‍♀️ Junior Lifeguarding is the bridge between Swim Lessons/Swim Team and the full Lifeguarding Certification Course. Participants will cover:

• Development of swimming skills and endurance
• Victim recognition
• First Aid / CPR / AED basics
• Water rescue techniques

The program includes approximately 30 hours of training, combining dry-land lessons and in-water practice each day. By the end, Junior Guards will have sharpened their decision-making and communication skills, gained a strong understanding of water safety, and learned what it truly means to be a lifeguard in their community. 🗣️🤝

📅 Session 1 Schedule:
• Dates: June 9th – June 27th
• Schedule: Mondays – Fridays, 7:00am–9:00am
• 🚸 Participants enrolled in JCC camps will be safely escorted to their camp groups after each session.

📅 Session 2 Schedule:
• Dates: July 7th – July 11th
• Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm (lunch break included)
• 🏆 Note: Friday, July 11th is the North Texas Guard Games. This session is scheduled as an intensive boot-camp style program leading up to the big event!

In addition to the program schedule, Junior Lifeguards have the optional opportunity to volunteer at the J Dallas Aquatics center to observe and receive mentoring from the Lifeguard team. Volunteer scheduling can be flexible, and coordination will be done with program staff after the start of the program.


🏆 North Texas Guard Games – Optional Bonus Experience!
Calling all competitive spirits! Junior Guards will have the chance to join the fun at the 2025 North Texas Guard Games on Friday, July 11th at the Flower Mound Community Activity Center.
This awesome regional event brings together Junior Lifeguards and certified lifeguards from all over to showcase rescue skills, fitness, first aid, and more—all in a fast-paced, team competition! 🥇🌟
• Compete in a team of 4 👥👥
• Attend the event alongside the JCC Lifeguard staff
• Final participation will depend on interest and team availability
• Additional registration fee will be required, price TBD.

COURSE PREREQUISITES: To participate in Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills:
• Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
• Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
• Complete the water competency swim test sequence without stopping:
• Step into water from the side and totally submerge.
• Maintain position for one minute by treading water or floating (or a combination of the two).
• Rotate one full turn and orient to the exit.
• Level off and swim on the front or back 25 yards.
• Exit without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguarding Certification
  1. Provide proof of identity and age. Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course. The Lifeguarding Instructor will verify the eligibility of participants to participate in the course by checking their proof of age and identity, which can be a driver’s license, state identification card, passport, or birth certificate.
    1. If a birth certificate is used to provide proof of age, an additional form of identification with a photo is also needed.
  2. Successfully complete a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is designed to confirm that participants have the physical ability to successfully participate in the training.
    Each participant is allowed two attempts for each skill test:
    1. Prerequisite 1: Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence (150/50 yards). You must complete the following sequence:
      • Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards.
      • After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading. While treading, you can only use your legs. Place your hands under your armpits. Your head must remain above the surface of the water.
      • After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
      • While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control.
      • You may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
    2. Prerequisite 2: Timed Event. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
      • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
      • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted.
      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.


The course is offered in a blended learning format. Blended learning combines online learning with in-person skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete all eLearning modules, including the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid final eLearning exam, at least two days prior to your first in-person skills session. Most participants complete the eLearning portion of the course in approximately 7 hours. Your experience may vary widely based on several factors including your PC, internet speed, and previous training. After registering but prior to the start of the class, an email will be sent with a link to access the online materials. Student will bring certificate of completion on the first day of in-person course. More information will be provided in course email.It is recommended that you read through and study the lifeguarding participant manual in addition to the eLearning material.

Due to the nature of the blended learning format of the course, registration for each course will close no later than 5 days prior to the start of the in-person session to allow time for students to access and complete online materials. Access link for the eLearning course will be emailed out prior to beginning of the in-person session. If you do not receive email with specific course information at least 5 days prior to beginning of your course, please contact us.Classes are limited to 10 participants under normal circumstances. If you register for a class that is at maximum capacity, you may be wait-listed and we will contact you to discuss different class dates.
To pass the course, students must:

  • Complete all online course content in advance of the corresponding in-person sessions (blended learning courses only).
  • Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
  • Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices, skill drills, activities and scenarios.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all skills.
  • Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent.
  • Pass the three (3) final skill assessments which includes:
    1. Assessment 1—Timed Response. Participants must complete a passive submerged rescue, extricate with the assistance of an assisting rescuer, and rapid assessment (including the delivery of 2 initial ventilations by either rescuer) within 1 minute, 30 seconds, and then provide 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR.
    2. Assessment 2—Rotation and Scanning. Participants must rotate into the lifeguard station, conduct surveillance from the station for 1 minute, and rotate out of the station.
    3. Assessment 3—Final Team Response Testing Scenario. Participants must perform a passive submerged rescue, extrication and rapid assessment, followed by multiple-rescuer CPR and use of AED and BVM resuscitator


Upon successful completion of the course, students will be certified for two years by the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

Lifeguarding Recertification

Lifeguard Recertification courses are for American Red Cross certified lifeguards whose certification is still valid or within 30 days of expiration. If over 30 days have passed since the certification expired, a full lifeguard course must be taken. Recertification classes are designed to help you update your skills and extend your certification for two more years.

Participants must complete the precourse skills session conducted on the first day of course to be eligible to participate. Each participant is allowed two attempts for each skill test:

  1. Successfully complete a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is designed to confirm that participants have the physical ability to successfully participate in the training.

Lifeguards who attend a recertification course are expected to have prior knowledge of all skills. Recertification courses are fast-paced with little time to focus on re-teaching. It is recommended that participants review the lifeguard and the chapter review questions prior the course in order to pass the course successfully. Click here to access the online manual.

To earn certification, participants must:

  • Complete all online course content in advance of the corresponding in-person sessions (blended learning courses only).
  • Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.

Lifeguarding Instructor

Lifeguard instructor courses train instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, and more courses and/or modules. Lifeguard instructor candidates are expected to have instructor-level competency in all skills and scenarios and the maturity needed to train future lifeguards. The course consists of a 2.5 hour online portion and a minimum 22 hours of in-person instruction.

Once registered through the JCC for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course, candidates will receive an email about two weeks before the class date with information about the course and how to access the online material.

In order to participate in the Lifeguarding Instructor course, candidates must:

  • Be at least 17 years old on or before the last day of the instructor course.
  • Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successfully complete the Online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor course prior to the first in-person session
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Skills Session on the first day of class which includes:
    • Precourse Swimming Skills Evaluation
    • Prerequisite Rescue Skill Scenarios Evaluation


To successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor course, the instructor candidate must:

  • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course.
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Skills Session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  • Successfully complete class activities, including the required practice-teaching assignments.
  • Demonstrate instructor-level skill competency in all skills and scenarios.
  • Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent


Upon successful completion of the instructor course, each candidate with be certified by the American Red Cross as a Lifeguard Instructor.

LGI/LGIT Review

This in-person Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer review course is the required course for all Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers to re-certify. During this course, Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers will participate in an in-water practice and polish skills session with their peers and a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. Lifeguarding Instructors and ITs may also choose to attend a brief “test out” session following this course to gain a basic-level Lifeguarding certification.

In order to participate in the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review course you must currently possess an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor or Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer certification, and:

Lifeguarding Instructors:

Complete all course updates prior to the update deadline.

  • Teach or co-teach at least one Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding course of record during the 2-year certification period.
  • Lifeguarding Instructor Trainers:
    • Complete all course updates prior to the update deadline.
    • Teach at least one Lifeguarding Instructor course of record or at least two Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review courses of record during the 2-year certification period.

Upon successful completion of the review course, participants will be re-certified by the American Red Cross as a Lifeguarding Instructor or Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer for two years.

Cancellation Policy

Please see the below guidelines regarding cancellations and refunds of all lifeguarding, lifeguarding review, and lifeguarding instructor courses:

  • From date of registration up to free cancel date (10 business days before first class date): Free refund of course fee, or free transfer to any available course.
  • From free cancel date (10 business days before first class date) to registration deadline (5 business days before first class date): Refund of course fee minus $20 cancel fee, or free transfer to any available course.
  • From class registration deadline (five business days before first class date) to first class date: No refund. Or, free transfer to any available course.
  • Online coursework not completed by first in-person session of class: No refund. Or, you may transfer to any available course and pay a $25 transfer fee.
  • Failure to complete precourse skills session at beginning of course: No refund. Or, you may transfer to any available course and pay a $25 transfer fee.
  • Failure to attend course: No refund and no transfer. If you did not attend due to medical or other reason, must contact to provide waiver.
Pre-Course Prep

Interested in practicing to pass the lifeguard precourse skills session? We offer training conducted by our American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructors to help prepare to pass the precourse skills test. Participants will get time in the water at the J and coaching from the lifeguarding instructor on proper techniques. Sessions are booked for an hour but may be billed for a half-hour if the session concludes early.

Member: $40/hour
Non-member: $50/hour

First Aid/CPR/AED Training

First Aid/CPR/AED basic-level training and First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor training courses are offered. These hands-on courses teach lifesaving skills like CPR, First Aid, and AED use for both adults and children - preparing you to respond confidently in emergencies at home, work, or in the community.

American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

This comprehensive course provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge to respond to medical emergencies involving both adults and pediatric patients. Participants will learn how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), administer First Aid for common injuries, and effectively use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in life-threatening situations. The course is designed to teach practical, hands-on techniques that can save lives in emergencies, whether at home, in the workplace, or in the community.

Key Topics Covered:

  • CPR for Adults & Pediatrics: Learn how to perform high-quality chest compressions, rescue breaths, and proper hand placement for both adults and children. Participants will be taught the differences between adult and pediatric CPR procedures.
  • First Aid Basics: Understand how to assess an injured or ill person, provide care for common injuries such as cuts, burns, fractures, and allergic reactions, and recognize signs of more serious conditions like stroke and heart attack.
  • AED Use: Get trained on how to properly use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for both adult and pediatric patients. Learn when and how to use the device to restore normal heart rhythms during a cardiac emergency.
  • Choking Response: Techniques for dealing with choking in adults, children, and infants, including back blows, abdominal thrusts, and the Heimlich maneuver.
  • Emergency Action Plans: How to assess the situation, make critical decisions, and work as part of a team to provide care until professional help arrives.

Certification
:

American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course will train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED courses, select Skill Boosts, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training.

In order to participate in this course you must possess a current basic-level American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED (or higher level) certification or equivalent and be at least 16 years of age on the last day of the instructor course.

This is a blended learning course consisting of online content, a skills session, and classroom segments. Online material must be completed prior to attending the classroom activities. Information about accessing the online materials will be sent to participants after registration.

Successful completion of the course results in a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification valid for 2-years.

Babysitter’s Training

This in-person Babysitter’s Training course prepares youth ages 11-16 to safely and confidently care for children and infants. It includes hands-on activities, videos, and discussions to develop essential, real-life readiness babysitting skills. The course covers feeding, diapering, picking up and holding children, safety, and emergency response.
