Teaching Excellence One Stroke at a Time
The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy at the J Dallas teaches excellence one stroke at a time with the comprehensive and results-driven SwimRight® Method. The curriculum stresses water safety and an award system that engages and motivates your child, providing an environment where swimming is respected, healthy, and fun. We welcome all members and non-members in the community.
Free Evaluation
We begin our registration process for ALL new swimmers with a free 20-minute evaluation class. The evaluation provides an opportunity to introduce the child to the program and to assess the child’s comfort level in the pool. An instructor will recommend private or group lessons and the appropriate starting point in one of eight levels of the program.
SwimRight® Method
The SwimRight Method® has a proven record of success and is based on progressive learning techniques, so that swimmers will receive all the tools necessary to master the water. The curriculum uses the swim-float-swim technique as its foundation, enabling students to safely and confidently enter any body of water. This approach also teaches swimmers the proper body positioning used to master the 4 competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly).
Three foundations of swimming are reinforced at every lesson:
- Correct body position and proper alignment
- Lateral rotation: Learning this skill allows swimmers to roll and breathe, moving quickly and properly through the water.
- Propulsion: This will be taught after steps one and two are mastered.
Water safety and stroke development are integrated within the curriculum and will turn students into safe, strong, efficient and confident swimmers.
Levels
Swimmers of the SwimRight Method® progress at their own pace, moving through seven levels of proficiency:
- Splasher: Introduces the student to the pool environment, teaches assisted back float and rollover.
- Floater: Learn independent back float, rollover and pass the Survival Test 1.
- Kickers: Achieve complete independence and confidence in the water, learn proper kicking on back and front and pass the Survival Test 2.
- Kickerboarders: Provides an introduction to rotational skills and body position with the assistance of a kickboard.
- Rollers: Solidify side kick skills and introduces arm stroke drills.
- Streamliners: Master catch up stroke and backstroke switch, learns breaststroke and butterfly kick.
- Freestylers: Develop the freestyle and backstroke, starts the breaststroke and butterfly development.
- Gliders: Fully master the freestyle and backstroke, further develops the breaststroke and butterfly, starts and turns.
- Flyers: Solidify breaststroke and butterfly and do advanced drills for freestyle and backstroke.
Earn Awards as You Learn
With our seven levels of learning, each student will earn motivational awards that inspire them to move up to the next level. Your child will receive:
- A color-coded swim cap corresponding to each level
- A swim book to help them set goals, keep track of the new skills they learn (with stickers to match), and record their accomplishments throughout the program
- For each mastered level, a ribbon to celebrate their achievements

about Lenny
Lenny Krayzelburg is a Jewish, Ukraine-born, Southern California backstroke champ and four-time Olympic gold medalist. At age 13, he moved to Los Angeles with his family. He lifeguarded and swam at the Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles, and his first major age group competition was at the 1990 JCC Maccabi Youth Games in Detroit.
Krayzelburg is a member of the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, the USC Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Hall of Fame. He was recently inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Many consider Lenny Krayzelburg the finest backstroke swimmer in the world.
KRAYZELBURG’S ACHIEVEMENTS
Krayzelburg won his first two U.S. National Championships in 1996 for the 100m and 200m backstroke. His “Breakthrough Moment” was taking the title for 200m backstroke in the 1997 NCAA Championships, finishing with the fourth fastest time in history.
At the 2000 Olympic Games, Lenny Krayzelburg won his first gold medals in all three of the events he participated in (100-Meter Backstroke, 200-Meter Backstroke and 4×100-Meter Medley Relay). He also established new Olympic records in the 100m (53.72) and 200m (1:56.76). His lead leg set the pace for the 400m relay gold medal victory, setting a new world record of 3:33.73.
Lenny has reunited with the JCC to start a new and exciting program. The Lenny Krayzelburg JCC Swim Academy is a year-round learn-to-swim program for children of all ages and levels. LKSA’s mission is to teach and inspire children to be water safe and to provide an environment where everyone learns and enjoys the benefits of swimming. Lenny, who owns the academy, is involved full-time with daily operations and future growth opportunities. He is passionate about what he does and will continue to educate and inspire children in the world of swimming. The Dallas JCC is proud to be able to offer this program to our community.
One of the unique aspects of our business model is perpetual registration. Students can join lessons at any time. Lessons are ongoing, year-round.
Monthly Billing:
We offer a monthly billing system that eliminates the need for terms and registration periods. After an evaluation, the parent comes into the office to determine his schedule. It is up to the individual to decide on how many classes per week, and once she has picked the day and time, she pays for the current pro-rated month, plus the following month. After that, the client is included in the automatic billing system. A schedule change can occur at any time, and any billing adjustments will be calculated by the office staff at the time of the change.
Absence/Makeup policy
Parents can use the iClassPro app or web portal to mark expected absences. Once the instructor takes attendance for that class, a makeup token will be in your account. You can book makeups using the app/portal.
• Lessons must be cancelled by 9 am to receive a token.
• Credit will not be given for makeup tokens.
• Once booked, make-up lessons can not cancelled in the app/portal. You must contact an office staff member to cancel.
Substitute Instructors
While we strive for instructor consistency, we cannot guarantee the same instructor for each lesson. If your regular instructor is not available, another qualified instructor will be assigned whenever possible. Credit cannot be given for substitute teachers. If we have to cancel a class due to instructor absence, your account will be credited the cost of that lesson.
Registration Fees
- The initial Enrollment Fee is $60 per student. Includes swim cap and student book.
- Parent Tot classes’ initial enrollment fee is $50.
- The annual registration fee is $20 dollars per child or $40 dollars maximum per family.
early childhood center
The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy offers weekly swim lessons to the students (ages 3+) of the Goldberg Early Childhood Center. These lessons are built into the GFECC curriculum and use the same SwimRight Method® as the swim academy. This builds a uniform platform for students who may take LKSA lessons in concert with their weekly lessons or may choose to continue their skills after they graduate from preschool.
The lessons are conducted by Chelsea Bailey who has been teaching with the LKSA for 3 years. Coach Chelsea bring years of experience in swim instruction of all ages and has a teaching style that motivates all children to learn.
Progress reports will be sent via StoryPark twice a semester. Up to date information can be obtained by emailing Lia Oberstar-Brown at lbrown@jccdallas.org.
The LKSA also offers lessons as an enrichment option for GFECC students Monday through Friday, Monday – Friday. Students can be picked up directly from their classrooms to go to their lessons. After the lesson, students may be picked up by a parent or guardian or returned to their classroom. To set up lessons or a pick-up, please email Lia Oberstar-Brown at lbrown@jccdallas.org.
HAVE QUESTIONS?
Swimmers learn and progress at their own pace. Upon registration, each student receives a swim progress book. Fun exercises and positive reinforcement encourage progress. Rewards are earned as swimmers complete new skills. Swimmers participate in safety tests to confirm proficiency, enabling them to move ahead with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
The JCC Lenny K Swim Academy begins lessons with babies as young as 3 months old. In fact, infants make outstanding students because they have an automatic breath-holding reflex and are very comfortable on their backs, which make learning to float quite simple.
The aquatic environment provides babies with complete freedom, comfort and virtual weightlessness. Repetitive motion and patterning help develop their muscle strength, confidence and self-esteem.
Yes, we offer lessons to everyone.
Lessons are recommended year-round at least once a week (two lessons a week are even more beneficial) and should be continued on a regular basis. Consistency is the most important factor in gaining proficiency and confidence in the water.
Yes, J members get lower pricing on all swim lesson option. click here
Yes. You will be able to mark your child’s absence in our app/portal (by 9am the day of the absence) and receive a makeup token for that class.
The LKSA is dedicated to matching the right instructor with each student, and we are confident that every teacher brings an exceptional skill to the program. So as participants progress, they are paired with new teachers. It also is important that students do not come to rely on only one teacher, but rather learn to be dependent on themselves.
Unique to the SwimRight Method® is the Survival Test, to guarantee that swimmers are truly water safe. To simulate a real water emergency, this test is done when the swimmer is fully clothed – though remaining in the secure and safe environment of the JCC. The test gives students the knowledge and confidence that they are truly able to survive in an actual worst-case scenario. We are proud to say that we put our teachings to the test!
The question is, what do you, as a parent or caregiver, want for your child? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1-14. Water can be a scary environment for children – and appropriately so! Young swimmers typically go through several stages while learning to swim, from fear and uncertainty to cooperation and interest. They often experience these stages more than once. Do not get frustrated if children resist lessons; persistence and encouragement from parents will help them move through the stages. And with skill comes confidence. As children learn respect for the water and how to be safe in it, swimming will become a fun activity.
If children seem worried during lessons, they will benefit much more if they are able to focus on the instructor and concentrate on swimming rather than looking to parents. As a general rule, sometimes it is best if the parent leaves.
It is natural for novice swimmers to be anxious; after all, this is a completely new environment. Once they learn to trust the teacher and themselves, though, swimming will become easier, and students will understand why they are learning. As they become confident and comfortable in the water, children will enjoy showing their new talents to parents.
The JCC offers a senior adult member (ages 65+) a reduced snowbird membership designed for those members spending time away from home. The price for an Individual Snowbird is $50/month and can be purchased for up to 3 months in a calendar year (this does not have to be 3 consecutive months).
The JCC Lenny K Swim Academy uses color-coded swim caps to denote ability. Students are required to wear swim caps at each lesson to help staff identify skill levels, to keep hair off their face and to give students a goal for which to strive. As a swimmer’s ability increases, a new color cap is earned.
Yes. We have an adult swim program that is perfect for older teens and adults who want to swim. See the Adult Swim Program for more information.
Yes. Those who already know how to swim can improve their skills, polish strokes, increase strength and receive many more benefits through the Lenny K Swim Academy.
